impossibly easy cat sweater

As I have mentioned previously, I am incredibly useless when it comes to anything that involves craft. There is an occasional exception to the rule and this is one of them. I present to you the impossibly easy cat sweater!

Our daughter posted a picture of a sweater she made for her new kitten, Shadow - it's a devon rex (the kitten - not the sweater) and she is fairly thin in the cat hair department (she is the closest you can get to a hypo-allergic cat) and Erin thought it would be a good idea to make her something warm for winter. Now Erin's craft skills are as non-existent as my own so I was very impressed when she put up a picture on facebook of her kitten looking like this (I think Shadow was too embarrassed to look at the camera!):

It was made with a couple of quick snips to a sock and then "simply slipping it over the cat's head" - inverted commas used here because any cat owner knows that nothing is "simple" when it comes to cats! After making my own attempt and trying it on the more compliant cat member of the family, I have decided that a man's sock would be a little kinder. My sock was a bit squeezy and Flit tended to walk a bit like a drunken sailor while she was wearing it - still it was a pretty good first attempt if I do say so myself! My next cat sweater will be made when I find a nice soft, manly sock in a decent colour (a fairly big ask - I'll be looking for a man's sock that isn't brown, black or grey...) Winter isn't here yet so I have a bit of time to look around and then practice my craft skills.

My daughter-in-law tried it with one of her socks and their burmese cat - it gave us all a good laugh and I wanted to title it "nailed it" after all the Pinterest fails that it reminded me of:

The original idea came from a youtube clip that I have included below in case anyone wants to have a turn at making their cat a little more stylish! I think the sock was a lot bigger than the one I used (or it was a particularly small cat.)

  1. Ha! so cute! I learned how to knit a few times... because I kept unlearning it. I envy people who can sew and knit such cute things!

  2. Why does a cat need a sweater? Sorry, but I don't really get this. I love animals and I honestly think this could be considered abuse. I try not to be negative about other people posts, but in this case I have to speak up.

    1. Hi Anita - I don't think most cats need sweaters - ours wore the one I made for long enough to take a photo and the same with our daughter-in-law's. If you'd read the whole post, you would have noted that our daughter's cat is a devon rex and they have almost no fur so they get quite cold in winter - she loves her little sweater because it keeps her warm.
