3 AFFIRMATIONS TO OWN IN MIDLIFE

3 Affirmations that will make Midlife so much richer - silence, warmth and peace

THREE AFFIRMATIONS TO OWN IN MIDLIFE

I came across a three part mantra a while ago that said "Let there be silence in my mind, warmth in my heart, and peace in my soul"  - nobody seemed to attribute it to an actual author (other than 'unknown') but I loved how profound it was and how it spoke to me the moment I read it. So much of it resonates with how I'm trying to live my life.

LET THERE BE SILENCE IN MY MIND

No more negative self talk, no more worrying, no more second guessing - these are all major aims for me at the time being. I want to keep the hamster off the wheel of my brain and let silence have its place. To be able to live each moment as it comes along without over-thinking it and turning it into a circus.

Going for a walk each morning gives me this time of silence. I do a little bit of thinking and a little bit of praying and a lot of just enjoying the serenity of my surroundings before leaping into the fray of the day.

LET THERE BE WARMTH IN MY HEART

Who doesn't want to have a warm heart? I want to have a heart that feels for others - I'm not known for my warm, fuzzy nature - but that doesn't mean that I don't have compassion and empathy and a desire to care about others (I just don't want to get too touchy, feely and get dragged into drama.)

As my family grows with my children getting married and then grows further with grandchildren in the future, I want to be a person who is warm and wise, someone who can offer heart-felt wisdom and care without being interfering. Being a wise woman would make getting older a little more bearable.

LET THERE BE PEACE IN MY SOUL

Knowing who I am and what I believe is so freeing. Being able to accept myself and my circumstances brings a peace that I've lacked for most of my life. I seem to have been in a constant battle between where I was and where I wanted to be (or thought I should be.) This means there is always a dissatisfaction within me that is at war with how I want to be.

Coming to terms with life and finding gratitude for all that I have has brought me a large measure of peace - there are still times I slip back into 'could have, would have, should have' moments but these are getting further apart and I am finding a balance that brings peace where I've never had peace before.

  8. All we have is now. What is gone won't come back. And the future depends on how we live the present.

  10. I tried to think of how I would add to these but couldn't as everything good comes from these things at the core. You captured these essential states of heart and mind in such elegant, simple language.

It just seems to me that the biggest things we could hope for, come down to things that are ever more simple. And yet they must be earned in all those years we live.

Your comment about elusive peace was touching; many people regard peace as something that comes with age, like fatigue or mellowing. It actually takes focus and motivation to change. At the same time, each step toward it seems a step away from harder life.

    Thank you, Leanne

    1. that was beautiful Susan - I just loved these affirmations because they focus on serenity rather than the need to push, push, push. As I get older I am finding that letting go and taking time are really important gifts.

  11. "Being a wise woman would make getting older a little more bearable." SO well said! I always thought that when I "grew up" I would be wise ... but I just don't feel like I am there yet!

  13. I know that you think I am the end all of compassion and empathy and I love you for it. We are a lot more a like than you would think. My kids call me Roseanne. Don't know if you had that TV show there with Roseanne Barr or if you ever saw it, but yeah that is pretty much me with a skinnier hubby and one less kid lol~ You have come a huge way in a very short time so give yourself a little break! Your heart is so much bigger than you give yourself credit for.

    1. I love the Roseanne reference - our kids always see the bit of us we think we keep hidden! Thank you for your kind words Rena - I am working on my heart and I think it's getting bigger since I took stock of what was important in life and started investing in that :)
