For those in the US who aren't part of the 195 million worldwide Eurovision viewers, I've included a link to their online page so you can catch up on the excitement here! Be prepared to waste a bit of time looking at all that "awesomeness"!! There's just something about the visual impact of Eurovision - each year they do their best to outdo the country who hosted it the year before. It is a mind-blurring montage of pyrotechnics, light shows, smoke machines, wind machines and more........and because we love it so much there are even drinking games that honour the whole shebang.

In my last post I gave a bit of an intro to Eurovision and all it's wackiness but it is also governed by strict rules - some of which include:

The maximum duration of each song is three minutes.
Each performance may consist of a maximum of six people on stage. No live animals shall be allowed on stage.
Artists shall perform live on stage, accompanied by a recorded backing-track which contains no vocals of any kind or any vocal imitations.
The lyrics and/or performance of the songs shall not bring the Shows, the Eurovision Song Contest as such or the EBU into disrepute.

To be a standout when you are limited to 3 minutes and 6 people you have to do some impressive stuff and that's where all the excitement comes in......and where many a drinking game has been invented. Some of the categories that warrant a drink are:

smoke machine
wind machine
fire
pyrotechnics
then there is the costume reveal
not to mention the costume being the main attraction
or the men who have their shirts ripped off, fall off or just not there in the first place

Seeing I'm not a drinker and my daughter (who is also a Eurovision tragic) lives a couple of hours away, we play the "snarky comment over the internet" game. The only problem with that is it can be used against you! Case in point was the screen shot she posted on facebook of the commentary we were doing on this song from Switzerland which had very dubious lyrics and I put my foot in it big time! Here is what she put on facebook I've included the lyrics here for clarification - it was not me I was referring to!)

I'm thinking it would have been safer to participate in some drink skolling - you can't post that on facebook! Still, we'll be at it again this year (we are hopelessly addicted) - roll on the 22nd-24th of May!!!!

Yeah. Because no one says anything they regret after they've been drinking . . .
Or at least anything that someone recorded. Or photographed . . .

I'm a huge fan of Eurovision! I watch it every year! I din't know all those strict rules you mentioned but I guess they make sense!
