IF WE WERE HAVING COFFEE

If we were having coffee these are a few things I'd be sharing from September - we're heading into Spring (Yay!) And because I always enjoy a good 'Taking Stock' blog post, I hope you'll humour me and sit a while as I share my news. There's nothing like a virtual cuppa and a chat, and I have lots to share from the last few weeks.

HOW TO APPROACH YOUR SENIOR PARENT ABOUT GIVING UP DRIVING

As our parents get older we find ourselves in the tricky position of having to broach difficult topics with them - one of these is giving up driving - here's a few helpful tips on how to have that conversation. #elderly #driving

INTRO

As our parents get older we find ourselves in the tricky position of having to broach difficult topics with them - often over areas where they think they're doing fine, but where in fact they're actually not quite up to scratch like they used to be. One of the areas I had to talk to my Mum about was my Dad's driving when his dementia started progressing. He felt like he was still the competent driver of years gone by, when the reality was that he was getting lost on his way home from the shops, and he was losing his ability to react and respond in an emergency.

I KISSED JOB HUNTING GOODBYE

Some people kiss dating goodbye, I decided to kiss job hunting goodbye. If there's really a Perfect Job out there then I'm letting it come to me. #midlife #jobs #jobhunting

DATING AND JOB HUNTING

There was a book that did the rounds of Christian youth groups back in the 90's called "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" by Josh Harris, it was based on the concept that Josh no longer wanted to go through the rigmarole of dating countless women in the hope of finding his one true love and offered an alternative. Twenty years later he changed his mind and wrote a retraction because the book was rather over the top in what it was advocating.

Despite that, the title was super catchy and made me think that dating and job hunting were a lot more similar than I'd realized. They're often preceded by a traumatic break-up, then a lot of soul searching, a desire to hook up with the "perfect" partner, the awkward interactions, the failed attempts, and then (hopefully) the ulitmate successful match that lasts a lifetime. Josh kissed dating goodbye and this is why I'm kissing job hunting goodbye...

SMILING WITH SELF-CONFIDENCE

How do we develop self-confidence? The two key starting points are eye contact and a smile. Confidence grows with every positive interaction we have. So look up and smile! #lifeinspiration

WHAT DOES SELF-CONFIDENCE LOOK LIKE?

It's "S" for Smiling and Self-confidence today on the List of More, and something I ask myself a lot is how do some people look so confident, and others look like they wish they could fade away into the wallpaper? Is self-confidence an innate character trait or do we develop it over time? What is it that makes us appear confident (even if we don't necessarily feel it?) I think two of the key components are eye contact and a genuine smile. In fact, I think a smile is the Midlifer's secret weapon!

IS THERE HEADACHE RELIEF 3 YEARS AFTER A DAITH PIERCING?

There's no scientific proof that a daith piercing works to relieve migraines and chronic headache. I've had mine for three years and this is how mine has impacted on my headaches. #daith #piercing #headaches #migraines

CHRONIC HEADACHES

Daith piercing has become an alternative treatment for those who suffer from ongoing migraines. I don't think I'm a true migraine sufferer, but I'd endured ongoing, and often debilitating headaches for decades. I'd been taking pain relief for them in many forms for a long time and was beginning to wonder what impact that was having on my kidneys and liver - especially when a headache lasted for several days. Headaches were so much a part of my life that I even have a "Headache Art" Pinterest Board that I filled with pictures of how a headache "looked" in its various forms.

RESILIENCE - IT'S ALL ABOUT THE REBOUND

5 ways to rebound from life's setbacks with resilience. Move forward, don't look back, learn and laugh, and live life to the full. #resilience

WHAT DOES RESILIENCE MEAN TO YOU?

Today I'm writing about "R" in the List of More and the very first word that came to mind was Resilience, which in Latin means “to leap back” In other words, Resilience translates to being able to rebound after experiencing loss, or calamity, or hardship. The picture comes to mind of those children's toys called Weebles. They had a strong and steady foundation that allowed a Weeble to be tipped or knocked over and then recentre itself after each "hit".

WHY I'M CHOOSING TO BE UNBUSY IN RETIREMENT

Are you tired of hearing about how busy everyone is in retirement? Why not focus on becoming un-busy and become part of the unbusy and slow movements that more people are choosing every day? #slow #unbusy #retirement

BECOMING UNBUSY IN RETIREMENT

A while ago I was asked to contribute to a collaborative post on Keeping Busy in Retirement and I started thinking about all the things I'm doing to fill my days now that I'm not working. But, underneath that first impulse to prove I'm "busy, busy, busy" was a different desire - one that was saying "You know what? I don't want to be busy all the time, I don't want to fill every day with a multitude of planned events." My soul wants to be Un-Busy and it's when I become un-busy that I feel more centred and more at peace.

IF WE WERE HAVING COFFEE

If we were having coffee these are a few things I'd be sharing from August - we're heading towards the end of Winter and the reappearance of Spring (Yay!) so I'm ready to pack away the Winter woollies and get out the Spring florals. And because I always enjoy a good 'Taking Stock' blog post, I hope you'll humour me and sit a while as I share my news. There's nothing like a virtual cuppa and a chat, and I have lots to share from the last few weeks.
