TEAM SPORTS
I'm tall - and when you're tall everyone thinks you're "sporty" - long legs mean you should be able to run faster and jump higher than everyone else. Unfortunately that's not always the case, I was never a fast runner and hated athletics events where I'd always be at the end of the running races. One thing I did do well in was team sports. I started playing netball when I was around 10 years old and continued through into high school. I had great team mates and my Mum used to come along and watch from the car - tooting the horn when we shot a goal.
FIRST
This is one of the first team pictures I have from my netball days. I'm Number 1 in the middle of the front row. I was always a goal shooter - this is where being tall paid off - and our team did well every season. Netball is a Winter sport so there were many times we ran through puddles on ashphalt courts - and that leather netball got really slimey when it was wet - all part of the challenge and the fun.MIDDLE
This is our team a few years down the track - I'm in the back row on the right in this one but you see that six of us were still going strong after playing together for several years. I still smile when I look at these pictures - and what is even nicer is that I'm still good friends with some of these girls - forty (YES FORTY!) years later.LAST
This is the last photo I have of me in a sports team. This one was taken in my final year of high school - we're the Year 12 inter-school volleyball team and we did a pretty good job of defending our school's honour on the court. I'm the last on the left and two of my closest school friends are sitting next to me (looks like we're the only ones who remembered to bring our shoes for the photo!)WHAT ABOUT YOU?
I hope my team mates check out this post and get a buzz out of seeing themselves when they were younger. Did you play in team sports? What was your specialty? Remember you can post a pic of yourself in your team uniform on my Facebook page if you want to share in the fun.

I love seeing these old photos---how fun to reminisce this way.
ReplyDeleteI was in gymnastics all throughout my young life, and it'd be so fun to find those photos!!
XOXO

you look like you'd be a gymnast Jodie - it seems to have paid off in Midlife for you too (I always think gymnasts are a bit like athletic ballerinas!)
DeleteWell I'm the opposite of you, being a shortie! I was never great at sport because um short legs! I was no good at speed. However, I had good endurance and was good at things like cross country. I too used to play netball. Think I was goal attack or something like that. I was good at shooting goals, even if I was short. However, sport was not my passion and never really has been. I'm more the creative, dreamer type! lol Love these photo's..such treasures to have! #TeamLovinLife
ReplyDeleteI'm not really sporty either Min - I think that's why netball appealed - there were lots of times where you got a rest when the ball was down the other end of the court :)
DeleteGreat photos Leanne. Yes I played hockey for years, but I don't have one photo of my team. I don't think anyone took photos of hockey, only netball or football. #TeamLovinLife
ReplyDeleteI can see you as a hockey player Kathy - you have that sporty go-gettum look about you that would have translated well to the field. I was always wary of those long sticks and hard little balls!
DeleteI've always been hopeless at team sports - the last one picked and all that. Plus I'm short and uncoordinated. I swam competitively, but that was pretty much it. I'm loving this photo series though. #TeamLovinLife
ReplyDeleteI was never great sports wise Jo but team sports helped balance my limited skills to one area and netball was a pretty calm sport back in the good old days.
DeleteI was tall so played basketball and netball when younger as well. I started bball when I was 8 in a team with my friends called Rubies.. I didn't play netball until I was at high school. I later played a lot of bball rep teams (local, regional and also made the state squad) and played rep netball - just local and regional.
ReplyDeleteI haven't played organised sport in decades however! #teamlovinlife
Basketball for girls didn't start until I was mid highschool Deb so I never really got into it - netball was the main sport for younger girls and it was a good fit for me - I certainly never would have taken it to the level you did though - amazing!
DeleteGreat photos and memories, Leanne. I was easily able to spot you in each photo (even before reading your descriptions)!
ReplyDeleteYou win the prize Donna - I didn't realize I was still recognizable from those dim distant days of my youth (nice to be told though!)
DeleteLove your pics Leanne. I'm neither tall nor sporty, so team sports were never my thing. My husband, on the other hand, was a champion sportsman, winning a coveted high school scholarship for his swimming ability and playing rugby for a prominent Sydney team. They say opposites attract - LOL! :) #TeamLovinLife
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I are a bit the same that way Lyndall - he has lifted his game athetically as time's gone on - and I think I've waned a lot. Definitely the opposites attracting thing with us too!
DeleteGosh, the only team sport I played was netball and I had the same team all the way through from ages 14ish to about 17 I think. My extracurricular activities were more solo. I started with ballet as a kid and was into Pony Club from aged 8-18. I have not personally continued with sports, dance or horses at all. Although I am/have been actively involved as a volunteer in my kids sports at both a coach and an administrator. I was outside in my PJs last night acting as goalie as my son practiced his soccer kicks. Does that count? #teamlovinlife
