A NEW CHALLENGE
Pennie from The Accidental Blogger commented on my 30 Days Of No Complaining Challenge that rather than one big one-off Challenge, she made a commitment each month to doing a little challenge. For instance her August Challenge was to drink a cup of green tea every day. I really liked the idea of extending myself a little and letting my no complaining challenge be the first of many. So for November I have given myself a new (fairly small) challenge.I'M A GROANER!
I watched the first season of "This Is Us" and really enjoyed it for how authentic the characters were and how well they were played through the different time phases. One thing that particularly caught my eye was Mandy Moore playing the part of a 66 year old Rebecca, it wasn't the added wrinkles, or the sensible haircut and clothes, it was the little groan and slight stiffness as she got up from the couch that really spoke to me.I have noticed that I do this too (not the sensible haircut and clothes so much), but definitely the little groan when I bend down low or when I get up after I've been sitting for a while. I'm not sure when it started and I'm not sure why I do it - I'm not in pain, I'm not making much of an effort, but that little sigh, grunt or groan sneaks out regularly.
THE NO-GROAN CHALLENGE
So I figure if Pennie can have a green tea challenge, I can have a no-groan challenge for the next 30 days. I'm going to move more (an extra challenge!) so I don't sit too long and I'm going to stand up or squat down smoothly and without sound effects (except for a creaking knee or two!)I don't want to sound like an old woman before my time. I don't want to give in to the aging process any more than I absolutely have to. I just need to make myself more aware of these little things and consciously decide not to do them. The funny thing is that I didn't even notice I'd slipped into it until I saw "Rebecca" doing the same thing. She's supposed to be 10 years older than me so I have no excuse at all!
WHAT ABOUT YOU?
Are you a groaner? Do you have a small thing you could do differently over the next 30 days? Are you up for a Challenge? Why not join me and I might get inspired for December from something you plan to do.

I admire you for continuing straight on with a brand new challenge. 'No groaning' sounds like fun. I look forward to reading your summary on how it goes!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking I might be on a roll Donna - but the no sighing/groaning thing is proving harder than the no complaining thing did!
DeleteI am a groaner definitely. I have RA and my bones ache considerably when I stay in the same position for to long. I definitely need to challenge myself to move more! Happy Holidays Leanne!
ReplyDeleteAt least you have a physical excuse Rena - I'm just pathetic and I'm giving myself a wake up call before I turn into an old lady :) And much happiness right back at you girl xx
DeleteThis is brilliant Leanne! I was recently with a good friend who has taken to groaning. After several during the day, I asked her if she was OK and we had a good laugh! I am trying to sit up straight when eating. I think I will join you in this 30 day challenge. If it works it will become a new year's resolution so maybe I will lick the slouch when at the table.
ReplyDeleteMy friend mentioned on FB that it's all about engaging your core (I just have to find mine!) So we'll sit up straight and stand up smoothly and feel like we're 20 again :)
DeleteClever idea, Leanne! I grumble at myself! Maybe next month I will commit to that challenge. Remind me, okay?
ReplyDeleteA field day? Get out of bed on the wrong side?
I have to keep reminding myself at the moment Shirley - it's a so entrenched in me and I do it unconsciously - I'm driving myself crazy!
DeleteHmmm . . . I don't groan. But I do grab-a-snack. My challenge this 30 days is to stop. Just stop. Then, hopefully I won't be dealing with other issues that will make we want to start groaning! :)
ReplyDeleteI don't do it because I'm fat, or because I'm in pain Diane - I just do it for no good reason - really annoying and I need to put a stop to it! You stop snacking and I'll stop whining!
DeleteGood for you Leanne! I like having a challenge each month and especially for health as it keeps us focused. I'm sure you will be feeling great by the end of the month!
ReplyDeleteI hope so too Sue - I want to stop sitting so much and start moving around more - just incidental exercise - but I start to ache when I sit too long and that's not healthy at all!
DeleteI also give out a groan when I get up sometimes. Strange, I'll go weeks without back pain, and then it comes back with a vengeance. Never sure why. Love the concept of the 30 day challenge. I'll try to de-groan myself!
ReplyDeleteWe'll de-groan together Laurie - at least you can use back pain as an excuse - I have no excuse at all so really need to lift my game!
DeleteOmg. You’re right! Where did that come from? Okay! Challenge accepted. Will let you know how it goes.
ReplyDeleteI don't know when I started doing it either Cathy - it's embarrassing to admit that I've become an old woman! Hopefully we'll both be groan free by Christmas :)
DeleteAh we are definitely groaners in this house Leanne, what a great challenge. I noticed some time ago that I was levering myself up with my hands in situations where I don't need to. I keep reminding myself to use my core muscles instead (that sometimes causes me to groan) Good luck with meeting your goal
ReplyDeleteMy friend told me it was all in the core but I'm still trying to find what happened to my core - I think I lost it sometime around my second baby!
DeleteI'm working on replacing groaning with gratitude, Leanne. Good luck with the challenge! You're an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice thought Corinne - I'm trying to replace it with singing - I turn the grunt into a tune atm :)
DeleteThanks for linking up and encouraging us to take the Challenge at #BloggersPitStop. Have a great weekend.
