The A-Z of Positive Personality Traits - Y is for Youthful

The A-Z of Positive Personality Traits - Y is for Youthful - www.crestingthehill.com.au

Next letter up for the A-Z challenge of Positive Personality Traits is Y - and Y is for Youthful. Who doesn't want to be young at heart? This personality trait speaks for itself as far as positivity goes! It doesn't matter how old you are, if you have the ability to stay youthful in your outlook and in your approach to life then you are in for quite a ride.

Being youthful doesn't mean being immature or thoughtless, it means keeping a fresh world view, being open to new things, looking for the fun parts of life. You can look at life through the eyes of a child without being childish. Older people who have kept a little bit of their youthfulness have such a joy de vivre about them - they exude a happiness that attracts others.

If you have a youthful heart and mind, your body naturally seems to be that way too. It might not be quite as sprightly as it used to be, but it is willing to have a go. Rollerskating might not be on the agenda but a game of hop scotch might still be tempting!

The willingness to try new things and not get stuck in a rut of "same old, same old" is part of youthfulness. Being open to change and embracing new ideas - technology stands still for no-one, so if you stay young at heart, you are willing to have a go at whatever "new fangled thing" comes along. For someone who's 85 it might be emails, or facebook, or twitter, or whatever - for someone else it might be blogging or Periscope or something completely new that I haven't even heard of.

Youthfulness and being open to having fun leads up to my very last positive personality trait that I'll be finishing April off with. It's about jumping into all that life has to offer and not missing out because we are fearful or living with an attitude of smallness or scarcity.

So for the conclusion of Positive Personality Traits it is going to be - Z is for Zest. And who wouldn't want to have a bit of zestiness in their life?

This post is part of the April #atozchallenge.

  1. Youthfulness is an attitude as you've pointed out. Being youthful is the best way to keep depression at bay, isn't it?

    1. I think it helps keep our minds active and positive Kalpanaa and that can only do good things for the Seratonin levels in our brains and that helps fight depression :)

  3. So right! I'm thinking of an aunt who died suddenly at 77, but up to, literally, the day she died, she was making lists of things to do, listened to modern music, enjoyed her grandchildren (volunteered with one at an animal shelter), and worked full time. She had such...youth. Yes. Incidentally, my Y theme was Youth, but from a different angle. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. Hi Alana - I have just finished reading and commenting on your post - we were definitely on the same wavelength with our word for the day - although yours had a much better back story :)

  4. The joy de vivre is really such an important aspect to hang onto as one gets older. Most people start alienating themselves from the younger generation by not even attempting to grasp tech or new-fangled contraptions. Being young at heart is proven to be therapeutic too! A great trait to hang on to!

    1. I completely agree Kala - we need to be staying relevant and fresh if we want to be valued by the next generation. Refusing to learn new things just holds us back and we get left behind.

  6. Great post Leanne. Definitely a healthy antidote to ageing... consciously trying to stay youthful by trying new things. Life is short. Make it happy! :)

    1. My sentiments exactly Seena - we can't complain that life is boring if we aren't getting off our tail feathers and doing something to help the situation.

  8. I love it!
I feel so much younger at 40s than I was in my 30s.
Youth comes from within and I love this feeling.
    Have a fabulous weekend, Leanne!

  10. What a wonderful reminder. So far, my husband and I have managed to maintain a 'youthful' outlook when it comes to leisure activities. Although we do lament the fact that it is really difficult to find good live music that starts before 9pm!!! Us mid-lifers want to see a good performance and still be in bed at a decent time. I don't think that's too much to ask!

    1. I'm impressed you are still out there listening to live music Laura - I'm not a big fan of really loud things any more - the latest I stay out is to see a movie these days :)

  11. Great philosophy and a fountain (of youth?? LOL) of ideas for future blog posts. No one wants to be the Get Off My Lawn curmudgeon, do they? But there sure are plenty of them around. Embracing change is def a sign of a youthful outlook IMO. I was talking with someone recently who was tossing themselves a pity party and claimed no one likes change, grump grump grump, etc. I stopped them right there and said yes, some are not afraid of change, and I'm one of them! I think it's like being blue-eyed or left-handed - some people are just programmed a certain way. That doesn't mean they can't change their ways. Just need to work a little harder at it. Like the woman said, 'a change'll do you good'.

    1. I agree Lissa - I'm a fairly structured person and find change difficult, but that doesn't give me an excuse to sit on my tail and bemoan the fun everyone else is having. People like me just need to put on their sassy pants and give it a go - life is zooming by and I don't want to miss it :)

  13. Hi Leanne what an inspiring post and you have certainly described the meaning of Youthful for us midlifers. Even though our bodies are aging it doesn't mean our minds have to and I think surrounding ourselves with younger people also keeps us young.

  14. Excellent advice for all of us over 50! I'm 61 and am always looking for new adventures. One of my favourite activities is going to Classic Rock concerts. Make me feel so young and alive. Cheers!
