ARE YOU WHIMSY-MAXXING OR WHIMSY RAGING?

Are you whimsy-maxxing or are you defined by whimsy and rage? Maybe somewhere in-between is "whimsy and age"

WHIMSY IS HAVING A MOMENT

It seems (based on the algorithms) that whimsy is the new flavour of the month. I've noticed a few whimsy quotes and thoughts appearing in my online feed and they made me smile and want to jump on the bandwagon myself.

Here's a couple of whimsical things I've noticed recently....

WHO DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?

We don't become happy souls or, alternatively, grumpy old people overnight, and we don't become wise and caring without putting in the work.

WHO DO WE WANT TO BE AS WE AGE?

I remember reading an article from John Mark Comer that discussed the idea that who we become in our old age is being determined by what we've focused our lives on in the lead-up. He says...

What you give your attention to is the person you become. Put another way: the mind is the portal to the soul, and what you fill your mind with will shape the trajectory of your character. In the end, your life is no more than the sum of what you gave your attention to.

We don't become happy souls or, alternatively, grumpy old people overnight, and we don't become wise and caring without putting in the work. Getting older can feel tricky at times when our body starts to slow a little, or lets us down occasionally. We can focus on what we're losing.... or we can turn our attention to all that we still have and enjoy the final third of our lives based on all the good that we've created and that's still to be found...

SPENDING MY AUTUMN MINDFULLY

Here's what living Autumn with a generous mindset has meant for me.

WHAT DID MY AUTUMN TEACH ME?

I thought I'd do a little seasonal update on what living Mindfully looks like for me through the year ahead. This is my Autumn look back, and for a change I thought I'd share some of the buying and selling I decided to do - mindfully figuring out that it's okay to spend money on things that make me happy after all those years of working hard and saving for a rainy day...

HAVE YOU HEARD OF THE TELL THEM THEORY? I LOVE IT!

the "Tell Them Theory" is based around kindness and lifting others up. Affirming those who are doing their best in our noisy world.

LET THEM VS TELL THEM

A couple of years ago I shared my thoughts about the "Let Them Theory" where if people are awful to us, we just let them behave like that and get on with our lives. It never really resonated with me and I explained why in my post (if you missed reading it you can find it HERE).

I don't want people like that in my life, I don't want to have people around me behaving in unkind ways while I pretend it doesn't bother me. It hurts my heart to be near people who do this:

3 THINGS I LOVE ABOUT EASTER

I love Easter and this special time of the year - it's like a little open window with a breath of fresh air blowing in.

IT'S EASTER AND THAT MEANS:

I love this special time of the year - it's like a little open window with a breath of fresh air blowing in. Easter gives me space to appreciate my blessings and I thought I'd do a quick post today to share three that came to mind over the last few days....

BLOOM SCROLLING - MINDFULLY MANAGING THE ALGORITHMS

Bloom scrolling is choosing to focus on the stories and images that are good for our heart and mind. It's like fresh water for the soul.

MEANINGFUL AND MINDFUL WORDS

As part of my exploration of my Word of the Year "Mindful" I've come across a few terms recently that have caught my eye. They're words that have depth and meaning to them, and they carry a little "something" that I'd like to incorporate into my own life. I've chosen five to explore further over March - which I'm making into my month of meaningful, mindful reflection.

Bloom-scrolling is the next word in my March series....

AMOR FATI - MINDFULLY EMBRACING ALL THAT HAPPENS IN LIFE

Amor Fati is used to describe a concept or attitude where one accepts and embraces all of life's experiences - including suffering and loss - as necessary and good.

MEANINGFUL AND MINDFUL WORDS

As part of my exploration of my Word of the Year "Mindful" I've come across a few terms recently that have caught my eye. They're words that have depth and meaning to them, and they carry a little "something" that I'd like to incorporate into my own life. I've chosen five to explore further over March - which is going to be my month of meaningful, mindful reflection.

The second of these words that drew my interest is a latin term "Amor Fati" - another term I'd never heard before, that resonated and gave me a perspective on how life has been for me over the last few years....

A YEAR OF APPRECIATING THOSE SMALL DELIGHTFUL MOMENTS

A look back over a year of choosing to find small delights and joys in the every day happenings in my life. Living imperfectly with great delight.

CHOOSING TO LIVE WITH DELIGHT

At the beginning of January, I chose "Delight" as my Word of the Year and it's been such a good way to remind myself to look for all those happy little moments that fill my days - moments that I often take for granted. I love that I'm living the life that "past me" would be so happy to see, and I feel like I owe it to her to live with gratitude every day.

So how has living with delight played out over my year?

5 WORDS THAT WILL INCREASE YOUR HAPPINESS BASELINE

Hannah Fry encourages us to use "these are the good days" to increase our happiness baseline. I think it sounds like a great idea.

WHAT IS A HAPPINESS BASELINE?

I didn't realize that we all have different happiness baselines. A happiness baseline is the level of happiness or wellbeing that we return to despite the ups and downs of life. Apparently it's influenced by our genetics, our circumstances, and making intentional choices about how we see our world.

Regardless of the starting point we're each at, we can gradually lift our happiness baseline which makes us more positive and more resilient in how we approach life day to day. Recently I came across a really interesting two minute video on how to lift that baseline with 5 simple words....

WHAT ARE THE SMALL MOMENTS THAT FILL YOUR HEART WITH DELIGHT?

When we start noticing the small joys in our everyday life, we find happiness creeping quietly into our world.

DOES HAPPINESS DEPEND ON THE BIG MOMENTS?

I used to think that happiness was about something wonderful happening that made me happy. The day to day stuff was just me doing life as best as I could. What I didn't realize is that happiness isn't just about those big moments - falling in love, new babies, puppies, kittens, birthdays, or holidays. Happiness can also be found in all the little joys that slide unnoticed into our day - even the not-so-great days can hold moments of joy.

HALFWAY THROUGH A YEAR OF LIVING DELIGHTFULLY

I choose to live my life with as much positivity as possible. That doesn't mean that life is all sunshine, but there is alway joy to be found.

6 MONTHS OF CHOOSING TO BE DELIGHTED

Back at the beginning of January I chose "Delight" as my Word of the Year. It was inspired by the quote I have in my blog's sidebar:
Living imperfectly with great delight

And it has been a really positive force in my year so far.

MAKING HEADWAY IN MY BATTLE WITH WORRY

Are you allowing worry to control your emotions, or are you learning to respond more thoughtfully to life's upsets and upheavals?

WORRY AND ITS SIDE EFFECTS

I feel like if there was a Stressers Anonymous, I'd be on their membership list. All my life I've been a worrier, an over-thinker, and a major stresser. If I could find a worst case scenario to apply to a situation, then that would be my first choice. I felt like I had to imagine the worst so I'd be prepared for it if it happened.

So.....how was that working for me? (to quote good old Dr Phil)...

MY THREE DELIGHTS FROM MAY

A few little joys from the month of May that remind me how good life really is.

MY MAY DELIGHTS

As I mentioned at the beginning of January when I chose "Delight" as my Word of the Year, I thought I'd round off each month with three delights. May has been a lovely month here in Australia - cooling off a little from the incessant summer heat (hooray!), and today I'm sharing for May a floral delight (or two), a footwear delight, a Mothers Day delight, and a bonus quote about living delightfully.

So, without further ado here are my three delights from May...

THE BEST EASTER EVER!

EASTER IS OVER FOR ANOTHER YEAR

I think this Easter was the best one I've had in recent memory. It was just full of all the things that make my heart happy - so much joy shared with those I love. I thought I'd do a little recap of it all as my small homage to The.Best.Easter.Ever....

MY THREE DELIGHTS FROM JANUARY

MY THREE DELIGHTS FROM JANUARY

As I mentioned at the beginning of January when I chose Delight as my Word of the Year, I thought I'd round off each month with three delights. For January and my first post in the series, I thought I'd share a personal delight, and a thought about delight.

So, without further ado here are my three delights for January...

FOCUSING ON THE FLOWERS AND NOT THE WEEDS

LIFE BECOMES WHAT WE LOOK FOR

I mentioned in my Word of the Year post last week that looking for joyful moments is the key to creating delight in my life. What I've come to see is that our life (and the world in general) is full of flowers and weeds - literally and figuratively. To live with delight involves the Frequency Illusion where we choose what we focus our attention on, we look for the flowers and ignore the weeds - or deal with them when necessary.

Today I thought I'd look a little more deeply at the flowers and the weeds....

FINDING DELIGHT IN THE YEAR AHEAD

THE BEGINNING OF A NEW YEAR

Well, Christmas and New Year's Day have been and gone and it's time to settle into the year ahead. I feel like each year somehow is a little better than the last. I'm not sure if it's Midlife that gives me such contentment, or whether I've just found my groove and I'm genuinely happy with the life I have. Whatever it is, I'm grateful every single day for this age and stage.

That being said, it's the beginning of 2025 and time to choose a new Word of the Year. I've tried New Year's Resolutions, and Bucket Lists, or ignoring it all and just getting on with another year, but none of those really resonated with me until I came across the idea of choosing a Word that feels right and helps guide me through the year ahead.

4 THINGS I WILL NEVER DO AGAIN NOW I'M IN MY 60'S

A TURNING POINT WHEN TURNING 60

When I turned 60 I wrote a post about the things that don't matter anymore. That was a couple of years ago and I've realised that I've become even firmer in my boundaries and expectations since then. I've always been prone to accommodating other people and putting my own needs second, but now I'm drawing a much deeper and wider line in the sand when it comes to what I'll accept and what I will never do again.

Today I'm sharing a few areas that I've noticed I've become stronger in and more committed to.....

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY TODAY - AND HERE'S SOME GIFTS I'M GRATEFUL FOR

ANOTHER YEAR OLDER AND MORE TO BE THANKFUL FOR

I can't believe that another year has glided by, it feels like I'm in a stream that keeps flowing and taking me along with it. Every year brings with it some new lessons, some thoughts, and some changes in perspective. I truly believe that the first third of life is about discovering yourself, the second third is about establishing yourself and your family, and the third third is about introspection, gratitude, creativity, and investing into others.

So, as I sit here with my morning coffee and think back over the last year, I thought I'd share a few things I'm grateful for.....

YOU DON'T GET TO CHOOSE YOUR AGE, BUT YOU DO GET TO CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE

cresting the hill

AGING IS INEVITABLE

No matter whether we feel our age or we feel a couple of decades younger, the reality is that we are aging and there is a process that we need to come to grips with. We can accept it, we can fight it, we can deny it, we can resent it, we can complain about it.....or we can choose to make the best of it.

I've passed the 60 milestone and my mind sometimes finds that hard to believe. I don't feel "60" and I don't feel like I'm heading rapidly towards becoming a senior citizen, but it's a fact that I can't change or reverse - I can only accept it and decide what I want to do about it...
