WHY MIDLIFE'S FABULOUS - TIME TO TRAVEL

The A-Z Challenge ~ Why Midlife's Fabulous ~ Time To Travel

MIDLIFE TRAVEL

Midlife is the time to go to all those places you have on your bucket list. You might not get to all of them straight away, but it's a great time to make a start and tick a few off. Living in Australia means that most overseas travel can involve long haul flights and lot of money. You can't pop across the Channel for a weekend in France or jump on a plane for a few days in sunny California. It takes a considerable amount of planning to launch off to one of these (very attractive) destinations.

EUROPE

I have been very blessed to have a mother who shared a little of her inheritance by taking me on two different trips to Europe several years ago. I had always longed to do one of those Amsterdam to Budapest river cruises but it was well out of our price range (especially when there are two of you to pay for). My husband was gallant enough (and probably relieved to have some peace and quiet) to let me go with mum - it was a great way to see if it was something we'd like to invest in one day in the future (and it WAS!)

The benefits of living in such a large and diverse country is that there is always something new to see. The west coast and east coast are quite different to each other and each has its own charm. My husband and I have been across to Sydney and Melbourne - and Queensland is on my to-do list (the bloggers over there are making it even more enticing!) Tasmania also has its place on our list - and possibly New Zealand further down the track.

Midlife travel - in a Bali villa for our daughter's wedding

We've been to Bali a couple of times (it's a very cheap overseas holiday destination for Western Australians) and it's where our daughter and son-in-law chose to be married a few years ago. We rented a lovely villa with it's own private pool, took my mum over with us for the wedding and enjoyed a relaxing break away from the hustle and bustle of life.

  1. I am from Canada. The farthest I have been is Las Vegas 4 times. I do not have desire to travel overseas but I do want to travel around my own country more and more north American travel.

  2. Travelling is something I wish I could do more of, but it's getting so expensive! My husband and are both from Europe originally and love going there the most, but we live in Canada and have decided to see more of our own country this year. The U.S. border is only a 90 minute drive from here, but the climate isn't the friendliest these days, so we've decided to curtail those road trips for time being. The biggest group of tourists we've seen in Europe (last visit was in 2013) were Australians. Friendly lot, you are. ☺

  3. A Melbournite living in London for the next few years until retirement, we have just returned from a break in Belgium and are planning the next sojourn in Iceland. It makes SO much difference being this close to other places. And I love train travel. So there will lots of leisurely hours on the tracks.

  6. I love to travel and now that my husband and I are retired it's possible to do so outside of school holiday periods! We loved New Zealand recently and we're off to Tasmania next month. I'm hoping to see some more of Australia and one of our daughters lives in UK so we always like to visit her. I'm currently in Queensland and I can confirm that it's lovely. 😊

  8. We have always traveled. Now that my husband has retired except working for my company part time, he is not interested in traveling as much. Go figure! We really got spoiled when I traveled a lot from work and had free first class upgrades and free passes to airline clubs and and club floor rooms at hotels. All those perks are gone now but it allowed us a really fun time. I do enjoy a drive, a road trip too.

  9. I have traveled without my boys (11 now) but been going on vacations with them lately. Although, lately I really want to go and explore and rekindle some lost romance with the man. (Mom guilt there though)

  10. Too bad I don't live along the Danube!! Well, should you come into some more travel money and plan a trip to, let's say the Rhine, let me know!
You're right, Australia is terribly far away from most other places. On the other hand you do live in a darn fabulous country! We never made it to the West Coast.

  11. Husby insists that now is our time to travel. Before one of the other or both of us succumb to the effects of aging. I like his thinking! :)

  13. I've never left the US, but I've been to every state in the continental US. Eventually, I want to go to London & Ireland, but realize that it may be a few years away. It's nice to think about it.

  17. I have been blessed to travel to so many places around the world. Still many more to see. I've travelled a lot with my parents. We've travelled together around India, UK, Europe, US, parts of Asia and in New Zealand - I prefer to travel with family rather than on my own. These are the wonderful memories I hold of my dad and relatives that are no longer with us. Travelling time from New Zealand is also long so not easy to take overseas holidays. Thanks for sharing your travels.
